When in Rome... errr.. Spain...

Oh Espana. One of my favorite countries. No, not because of tapas, or because of the landscape that reminds me of Texas, but because of the laid back culture. Spaniards are not in a hurry, and don't expect them to be unless if you are in the metro.
I was only in Barcelona for a day, but here are some things I got out of the way immediately:

1) Shopping in El Bari Gotic.
The Gothic Quarter es Phe-nom-en-al, but not for those with a bad sense of direction. It is very easy to get lost in the winding narrow walking streets of the Gothic Quarter, so be sure you know the names of a few main streets before you go in case you need to ask for directions. I suggest stopping at el Bar Nemrut on Plaza de Veronica for a refreshing pitcher of Sangria Cava (Sangria made with champagne). An entire pitcher runs for 12 €, or opt for the normal red Sangria for 7.5€.

2) La Boqueria
A must visit every time I am in Barcelona. Although touristy, its worth the trip. You can buy fruit, fish, meat, cheese, candy, and even wine in this market among markets (Although I am told by my host family in Valencia that the market in Valencia is the best in all of Europe :) ). Make sure you go before 2pm because most of the meat market stalls close before this time. If you're a late riser, you can still grab a 1€ refreshing fruit drink (I recommend Fresa y Coco or naranja y coco) and then head to my number 3 spot.

3) Siesta at La Playa
At metro stop Barcoloneta you can easily access the beach from the metro, you can take the bus, or you could walk from Las Ramblas and turn left and continue along the port. I prefer walking, but be prepared and have a lot of time to pass. When you arrive, find a sweet spot on the sand, spread out your bamboo mat, and do as the spaniards do: Siesta! This time of year has perfect weather and you will find it easy to snooze! (just be careful of your belongings)

4) Chupitos Gratis! at Port Olympic.
During the week, there is no one around the clubs until about 2. However, if you go before this, you can take advantage of the bars trying to get people into their clubs. Grab some of your hostel mates and head down to Port Olympic and take advantage of "Chupitos Gratis, Sangria Gratis, Cerveza Gratis" then head to a local spot. Just be sure to take a taxi on the ride home and go with a few friends, as this area can be a little sketchy when night falls.
